Scoreflection and the other practice apps

Plenty of apps listen to you play. The difference is what they listen to you play. Most of the well-known piano apps teach from their own catalogue of songs and lessons. Sheet music readers show your own music but don't listen. Scoreflection is built for the gap between them: you open your own score, play it, and every notehead is marked, with chords and both hands heard through the microphone and the listening done on the phone.

That doesn't make it the right app for everyone, and the table below shows where others are further along. It only covers what each vendor documents itself; the sources are at the foot of the page.

Which one should you pick?

Honestly, it depends on where you are.

You are starting from zero

Take a course app: Simply Piano, flowkey, Skoove or Yousician. They teach you from the first note, in order. Scoreflection has no beginner course; it assumes you already have music you want to learn.

You have your own pieces to learn

That is what Scoreflection is for. Open the MusicXML your teacher sent, or one you downloaded, play it, and see every note you got wrong on the page itself. Chords, both hands, repeats and restarts are all followed. Here is how to get your own sheet music into it.

You play in a school band or orchestra

MakeMusic Cloud is built around teachers assigning pieces to a class, and it covers the wind, brass and string instruments whose Scoreflection listeners are still in development.

You only need to read or scan

A reader such as MuseScore or a scanner such as PlayScore 2 is enough. So is Scoreflection's free plan: the library, import, playback and the tuner cost nothing.

What makes Scoreflection different

None of the pieces is unique on its own: other apps listen, some hear chords, some grade imported music. What Scoreflection puts together is all of it at once, on your own score:

  • Your music, not a catalogue. Import MusicXML, MXL, MNX or LilyPond, and the piece is graded like any other.
  • Every notehead gets a verdict. Correct, wrong, not played, too short, too long, too soft, too loud, and notes that were never written.
  • Chords through the microphone. A polyphonic model we trained ourselves, so an acoustic piano or a guitar needs no cable.
  • The listening stays on your phone. No audio is uploaded, and practising works with the network off.

And where it falls short today: two instrument families are supported, piano and the fretted strings. The others are in development. Read more on the instruments section and in the FAQ.

How this table was made

Each row comes from that vendor's own website, help centre or app store listing, read on 11 September 2026. Where their pages don't mention a feature, the cell says so rather than guessing, and prices are left out because they differ by store and region and change often. Features change too: if something here is out of date or wrong, tell us and we will correct it.
